Sunrise over MawenziSummit Day

We got up a little before midnight, had a hasty breakfast and some Immodium to keep Kibo's Revenge in check, and headed up the mountain.

Mitch quickly outpaced the group and made it to the true summit, Uhuru Peak, in time for sunrise over Mawenzi.

It was very cold and windy, but it was great to get to the summit. The receding glaciers appeared to be like giant land icebergs. The crater was huge.

Off the Mountain and Home

Mitch during descent Bruce during descentWe got back to the Kibo Hut in the late morning, then hiked down to the Horombo Huts where we spent our third night on the mountain.

The next day, we hiked out to the Marango Gate and spent that night in Moshi. The next day, we took the Devanu shuttle back to Nairobi where we spent our last night in Africa. We were able to walk around Nairobi and do a little souvenir shopping, but we soon got tired of walking around with giant dollar signs on our foreheads.

Before leaving Seattle, I had left a third week in Africa open in case I wanted to do a solo safari or other sightseeing. But I was ready to go home.

The End.
